Introduction

One of the animals that live in the Arctic are the polar bears and they are the mammals that rule the North. The powerful hunter is intelligent, fierce and adaptable. The polar bears learned how to survive in the harshest place. Polar bears have white furry coat and they are excellent swimmers. They can easily eat up to 100-pound worth of meat!

Unlike the brown bear, the polar bear has a more elongated body build and a longer skull and nose. the feet are very large to even out the weight when walking on snow or thin ice and to provide propulsion when swimming. The polar bear’s claws are short and stocky so that they can grip heavy prey and and also the ice. Polar bears have a thick fur coat and a layer of blubber under their skin to keep themselves warm in the extremely cold weather.

Its preferred habitat is the sea ice covering the waters of the Arctic inter-island. These areas, known as the “Arctic ring of life”. The polar bear tends to go to areas where sea ice meets the water. Polar bears are usually found primarily along the perimeter of the polar ice pack, rather than in the Polar Basin close to the North Pole where the density of seals is low.

Polar bears are the most carnivorest among the bear family. They usually hunt and feed on walruses and seals. The Arctic is home to the seals, which makes it easier for the polar bear to hunt for food.

Polar bears hunt at the interface between ice and water. It’s hunting method is called still-hunting and they have excellent sense of smell to locate their prey, especially a seal breathing hole.
